The churches of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) constitute the world’s largest evangelical denomination. As Baptists, we have a long and cherished history rooted in the Protestant Reformation and in the subsequent spiritual awakenings. Upon this revered foundation, The Southern Baptist Convention was forged in 1845 with the stated purpose to “elicit, combine, and direct the energies of the whole denomination in one sacred effort for the propagation of the Gospel.”
Some of our doctrinal distinctives include:
- Inspiration & Inerrancy of Scripture
- Authority & Sufficiency of Scripture
- Supremacy & Sovereignty of God Over All Things
- Salvation by Grace Alone, through Faith Alone, in Jesus Christ Alone
- Priesthood of All Believers
- Perseverance of the Saints
- Baptism of Believers by Immersion
- Regenerate Church Membership
- Autonomy of the Local Church
- Separation of Church & State
Over the course of our history, Southern Baptists have issued several statements of faith. The first recognized confession of faith that Southern Baptists produced was "The Abstract of Principles" (1858). Since that time, Southern Baptists have twice updated a statement called "The Baptist Faith & Message" (1925, 1963, & 2000).
